Iran & the ‘Clash of Civilisations’

SOME THOUGHTS inspired by the latest edition of
World Affairs, Journal of International Issues,
Volume 11, Number One, which is centred on
Iran and the ‘Clash of Civilisations’.

The reality we see about us certainly indicates that a major shift is being prepared in the distribution of power across the globe, but what the true nature of that shift might be is what has to be pondered deeply.
We see Iran emerging as a major world power enhanced by its potential to acquire nuclear weapons. But we cannot ignore that an ‘Islamic Bomb’ has existed for almost two decades, yet Islam did not come to occupy a leading position on the world stage just by this fact. Something else is required, and that is the thrust of the Time-Spirit. What is the direction the evolution of consciousness on this planet is taking, and what is driving it onto that course?

Iran is being used by Sunni Islamic leaders to foster what appears to be a common agenda. However, it is not at all ‘common’. Sunnis and Shiites are worlds apart; and at root they loathe each other more than what they feel about infidels. For a Muslim there is nothing worse than an apostate, – witness the Salmon Rushdie case as an example. For the mainstream Muslim that is what Shiites are: apostates. Their belief in the return of the Messiah, the Mahdi, can never be accepted by the main body of Islam. This is being displayed for us daily by the violence in Iraq. It is not so much against the allied forces as between these sects. The target of terrorism in Iraq is the Shiite rulers, and it will go on and on until somehow the Sunni minority regains power and is able to subjugate once more the majority sect.

Perhaps intellectuals and political analysts are not sufficiently aware of the schism that exists in Islam. It is brushed aside for the moment because it serves all parties to do so and to put a face to the world of a unity that actually does not exist. Iran appears to be gaining the position of leadership of the Islamic world. But this is merely until a critical threshold is passed, perhaps the extinction of Israel by an Islamic Bomb coming either from Iran or Pakistan, or both.

Once the hour of truth arrives the episode from the Bible, the building of the Tower of Babel, will play itself out. Divide and rule has always been the tactic to control the process of evolution in order to secure that the movement continues and does not exceed itself, that it is not arrested prematurely. In the current context such a situation would mean the destruction of all civilisations, Eastern and Western, and possibly of the Earth itself.

There is an immensely important process playing itself out at this vital crossroads of history. What the world is experiencing has little to do with the obvious such as a struggle for energy control, military dominance to further a certain economic system and the lifestyle it encourages; or even neo-colonialism of sorts. It is true that what is transpiring is a clash of civilisations; but we must be more explicit and describe it as it is, and particularly as it is surfacing today with an ever greater clarity. The clash is between the two Orthodox Religions both of which arose in the Age of Pisces (234 BCE – 1926 CE).

The civilisations in question were each founded on one of these religions, Christianity and Islam. This is indeed the struggle that is transpiring today. Both Islam and Christianity are losing their hold over the minds and hearts of the people; but above all, they cannot manage to regain a hold over the reins of power as they operate today. The Time-Spirit has turned the corner definitively and does not look back at what it left behind.

Islamic leaders believe that the past two millennia witnessed the ultimate dominance of Christianity, in spite of their own rise and many victories which almost carried Islam to the position Christianity holds today. They further believe, because of their God-given possession of a significant portion of the most important and coveted energy source, that this new millennium will witness the rise and definite imposition of an Islamic world order. Their time has finally come, they believe.

On the other hand, in view of the undeniable factor of a looming Islamic dominance, the head of Christendom has openly appealed for a united European front, but reasserting its Christian roots above all else, in order to counter the Islamic threat. Never before in the modern age have we seen religion declared the basis for unification of forces as we see today.

It is to be noted that the German Chancellor, who presently heads the European Union, has openly sided with the Pope in the call for a new Europe to emerge under the banner of Jesus Christ. Where have the gains of the last century gone? Where is our hard won secularism in the face of such a retrograde demonstration of despair and a paucity of ideas and strategies? We are not to revert to the Holy Roman Empire. A new world awaits us.

The plan of the Time-Spirit for this current Age of Aquarius is quite different than appears on the surface. In its initial stages the focus is on what might be called a ‘cleansing of the slate’. The dominance of either one of the religions of the Piscean Age is not the goal. What we are seeing today – and indeed what lies at the basis of the Iraqi conflict – is to hasten and aggravate the internal conflicts between the sects on both sides of the spectrum. But the time will soon come when the majority force of Islam will rear its head and turn on its ‘saviour’ Iran. These two forces will destroy whatever pretence either of them has for world domination. This will happen not because one is good and the other bad, one the true faith and the other the false, but simply because the Time-Spirit has moved on. The new world it fosters, and whose moment has come, is a world based on a reality that is not structured on divisive perceptions. It is a world where true unity prevails. But for that to be perceived one has to have the courage, even if in just a small portion of humanity, to accept that the dominant forces of the Age of Pisces are fast fading to clear the slate, be this in the realm of orthodox religions, imperial post-colonial domination, or whatever would pose a threat to the survival of the new world order of unity and truth.

Peter Heehs’s Betrayal and an Ashram in Upheaval – Two Sides of the Same Mistake

Award-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz recently wrote an article on the factors leading to the current economic crisis for Vanity Fair entitled ‘Capitalist Fools’ which begins, ‘What were the critical decisions that led to the crisis? Mistakes were made at every fork in the road – we had what engineers call a “system failure,” when not a single decision but a cascade of decisions produce a tragic result.’ Stiglitz proceeds to discuss five specific mistakes that led towards the current morass of the U.S. economy. Each faulty choice was based on the same central flaw – the same faulty idea, world view and philosophy that dictated U.S. financial policy since 1987, when Alan Greenspan was put in charge of the Federal Reserve. He closes the article with the following conclusion and a confession by Greenspan:

‘The truth is most of the individual mistakes boil down to just one: a belief that markets are self-adjusting and that the role of government should be minimal. Looking back at that belief during hearings this fall on Capitol Hill, Alan Greenspan said out loud, “I have found a flaw.” Congressman Henry Waxman pushed him, responding, “In other words, you found that your view of the world, your ideology, was not right; it was not working.” “Absolutely, precisely,” Greenspan said. The embrace by America—and much of the rest of the world—of this flawed economic philosophy made it inevitable that we would eventually arrive at the place we are today.’

After reading the article I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be a godsend if those whose will it has been to protect the yoga and legacy of Sri Aurodindo and the Mother would make such a sincere and public inquiry into the question of what central flaw and subsequent series of mistakes have led to longtime ashramite, Peter Heehs’s betrayal of their cause and to the crisis this betrayal has created in the Integral Yoga community? Would any be willing to recognize and admit that such a flaw exists and inevitably marches them towards collapse from the inside out?’ Continue reading ‘Peter Heehs’s Betrayal and an Ashram in Upheaval – Two Sides of the Same Mistake’

A Calendar that Unifies – Questions and answers on reforming the Hindu Calendar

Q. I have before me a letter written by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1953 to the Calendar Reform Committee. He wrote, ‘Now that we have attained independence, it is obviously desirable that there should be a certain uniformity in the calendar for our civic, social and other purposes and this should be based on a scientific approach to the problem…’ It’s been many years since this message was written, nothing has happened. What is your interest in bringing up this issue again?
A. It is not exactly that nothing happened. That Committee did indeed agree on a calendar for the nation; but in what concerns ‘other purposes’ the result was unfortunate. In the same letter Pandit Nehru remarks that there are some 30 calendars in use and that this causes a certain confusion. It was made worse confounded by the fact that there is no agreement on the actual starting point of the calendar year among Hindus, unlike for civic purposes with the government having adopted the calendar in use throughout the world. The Question of Alignment and the iconic 2012

Written for students of the New Cosmology by Thea (Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet) Director, Aeon Centre of Cosmology January 24, 2009.

Something more must be said of the Earth’s axial tilt at 23.20 degrees since it plays a role in the fantasies, if they may be so called, of many new-age groups. If I am not mistaken, even Edgar Cayce spoke of a future re-alignment of this axis at an unspecified time which would cause wide-spread destruction. Over our recorded period of history this 23 degree tilt has been in place – and certainly for an untold number of years before our times. In my view, the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza reveals that the ancients had the tilt on their minds as well. Continue reading ‘The Question of Alignment and the iconic 2012’

‘La Salle du Mensonge’

In early Ashram days there was a reading room where all the daily newspapers were kept and the sadhaks could read. It still exists. At a certain point the Mother was asked to name the room. She called it, La Salle du Mensonge, or the Room of Falsehood. If this was true in her time, imagine what she would feel about the state of the media in today’s world. Is the True Significance of Immortality Day Lost on Followers of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother?

Sri AurobindoThe 26 November Mumbai Attacks fell on the 82nd anniversary of Immortality Day, and 36 years exactly after the Mother gave the following ‘Immortality Day’ message:

‘Before dying, falsehood rises in full swing. Still people understand only the lesson of Catastrophe. Will it have to come before they open their eyes to the truth? I ask an effort from all so that it has not to be. It is only the truth that can save us; truth in words, truth in action, truth in will, truth in feelings. It is a choice between serving the truth or being destroyed.’ – The Mother, 26 November 1972

Do these synchronicities fall into the mind’s waste bin of random coincidence? Is it at all significant that the passage of the Indian Constitution also transpired on 26 November, in 1949? More on Makar Sankranti & the Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

An excerpt taken from Movement of Restoration of Vedic Wisdom:

‘From antiquity the Vedic/Hindu civilization has been founded upon certain eternal truths, forming the basis of the ancient dharma. It is a mythic civilization, rooted in the cosmic harmonies which permeate every facet of its culture, not merely as a passive reflection of a static cosmos, but as an applied dynamic knowledge. With the passage of the Ages, knowledge of these laws and harmonies became clouded over. The ancient Vedic scriptures, repository of these immutable truths, succumbed to interpretations which fragmented their original unity. As a consequence their sublime truths were either misinterpreted or lost. Continue reading ‘More on Makar Sankranti & the Winter Solstice’

Conference on Vedic Calendar Reform

Dear Friends, I am happy to announce that the one day Conference on Vedic Calendar at Kumbakonam conducted by Madam Thea on 9th December 2008 ended successfully. The Conference was held at Hotel Le Garden’s Le Senate Board Room and exactly 48 persons participated. The attendees included the followers of Vethadri Maharishi, RSS group, H.R. & C.E. Department officers, lawyers, some musicians and Press people. The Conference started with Sri Ganapathi and Sri Saraswathi vandhana followed by Vedic chantings. Madam Thea was then honored with shawls and garlands after which the Conference started. As usual, Madam Thea gave a brilliant lecture on Vedic Cosmology, Makar Sankranti and the importance of correct time and date for Hindu festivals. The Talk was illustrated with necessary pictures and diagrams.

I can feel the immediate effect of the Conference today. A gentle man asked me for the availability of software for writing Horoscopes according to Sayana [Tropical zodiac] system.

Makar Sankranti and the Winter Solstice

Solstace and Equinox image[I was recently asked in a study group] to write something about the approaching Winter Solstice celebrated in India as its most important cosmological ritual, the Makar Sankranti. As most of you will know by now, the Solstices and Equinoxes are the balancing points of our journey, both individual and collective, around the Gnostic Circle. Indeed, we reproduce the movement of the Earth in its revolution around the Sun on the basis of the laws of correspondence in which “a day equals a year”. The Solstices and Equinoxes mark off the four divisions of the 24 hour day as Dawn, Noon, Sunset and Midnight. Those of you who have observed your passage through the Circle on the basis of these divisions will appreciate the accuracy of this Cosmic symbolism and also the indispensable need of an accurate measure to insure the correct starting point of your journey.  The need of a true measure becomes even more important when applied to collectivities because even a slight inaccuracy can make the difference between Dharma and Adharma, truth or falsehood.

India, as you know, suffers from an adherence to an old and inaccurate system of zodiacal measure known as the Sidereal or Nirayana system which uses the Constellations as the basis of its measure.  According to the Nirayana system and its progressed Ayanamsha or Zero point, the Makar Sankranti falls on 14 January, some 23 days/degrees from the actual Winter Solstice, shortest day of the year. The true measure, according to the Vedic sages, is based upon the Tropical or Sayana system which uses the unchanging  Ecliptic measure to mark the Sun’s passage from sign to sign and season to season. According to the Sayana system, this year’s Makar Sankranti will occur on 21 December at 5:25 pm. At this very moment the Sun will move into the Cardinal sign Capricorn; the days will begin to lengthen and the light will begin to increase.

As important as the cyclic measure is to our study of the Cosmic Harmonies, there is another, more hidden aspect of the Makar Sankranti which relates to the occult dynamics of Contraction and Expansion or the convergence of directions known as Involution and Evolution. We know for instance that in the months approaching the Winter Solstice, the days grow shorter and there is contraction of the light. We might imagine this contraction as an involutionary pressure  compressing  things toward a “Point” or Seed which will then evolve after a certain threshold in Time has been crossed. Since the Convergence conference in September and the Autumnal Equinox, we have observed this process of contraction or compression first hand in both the global credit crash as well as the Mumbai attacks. And now, with the approach of the Makar Sankranti, we are nearing that point of reversal and an increase of the light. One can only imagine what events lie just ahead but to me the greatest gift Thea has given us is to be able to SEE whatever happens in the context of these eternal Cosmic Harmonies.
