Peter Heehs’s Betrayal and an Ashram in Upheaval – Two Sides of the Same Mistake

Award-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz recently wrote an article on the factors leading to the current economic crisis for Vanity Fair entitled ‘Capitalist Fools’ which begins, ‘What were the critical decisions that led to the crisis? Mistakes were made at every fork in the road – we had what engineers call a “system failure,” when not a single decision but a cascade of decisions produce a tragic result.’ Stiglitz proceeds to discuss five specific mistakes that led towards the current morass of the U.S. economy. Each faulty choice was based on the same central flaw – the same faulty idea, world view and philosophy that dictated U.S. financial policy since 1987, when Alan Greenspan was put in charge of the Federal Reserve. He closes the article with the following conclusion and a confession by Greenspan:

‘The truth is most of the individual mistakes boil down to just one: a belief that markets are self-adjusting and that the role of government should be minimal. Looking back at that belief during hearings this fall on Capitol Hill, Alan Greenspan said out loud, “I have found a flaw.” Congressman Henry Waxman pushed him, responding, “In other words, you found that your view of the world, your ideology, was not right; it was not working.” “Absolutely, precisely,” Greenspan said. The embrace by America—and much of the rest of the world—of this flawed economic philosophy made it inevitable that we would eventually arrive at the place we are today.’

After reading the article I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be a godsend if those whose will it has been to protect the yoga and legacy of Sri Aurodindo and the Mother would make such a sincere and public inquiry into the question of what central flaw and subsequent series of mistakes have led to longtime ashramite, Peter Heehs’s betrayal of their cause and to the crisis this betrayal has created in the Integral Yoga community? Would any be willing to recognize and admit that such a flaw exists and inevitably marches them towards collapse from the inside out?’ Continue reading ‘Peter Heehs’s Betrayal and an Ashram in Upheaval – Two Sides of the Same Mistake’

‘La Salle du Mensonge’

Written for students of the New Cosmology by Thea (Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet) Director, Aeon Centre of Cosmology, Skambha, 22.1.2009, 11 am. [This article was referenced in The Question of Alignment and the iconic 2012]

In early Ashram days there was a reading room where all the daily newspapers were kept and the sadhaks could read. It still exists. At a certain point the Mother was asked to name the room. She called it, La Salle du Mensonge, or the Room of Falsehood. If this was true in her time, imagine what she would feel about the state of the media in today’s world. Is the True Significance of Immortality Day Lost on Followers of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother?

Sri AurobindoThe 26 November Mumbai Attacks fell on the 82nd anniversary of Immortality Day, and 36 years exactly after the Mother gave the following ‘Immortality Day’ message:

‘Before dying, falsehood rises in full swing. Still people understand only the lesson of Catastrophe. Will it have to come before they open their eyes to the truth? I ask an effort from all so that it has not to be. It is only the truth that can save us; truth in words, truth in action, truth in will, truth in feelings. It is a choice between serving the truth or being destroyed.’ – The Mother, 26 November 1972

Do these synchronicities fall into the mind’s waste bin of random coincidence? Is it at all significant that the passage of the Indian Constitution also transpired on 26 November, in 1949? Q: There has been a lot of news here in India on the upcoming elections in the USA. A month ago when the primaries began the front page of THE HINDU was full of the results, along with big photos. In your cosmology you put the India-USA axis as a central tenet. So how do you assess all that is happening now? Continue reading ‘India and America in the New Order’

The Nehrus: A Phenomenon of India’s New Cosmology

Indira Gandhi‘There is perhaps a truth in the Vedic idea that the Spirit of creation framed all the movements of the world by chandas, in certain fixed rhythms of the formative Word, and it is because they are faithful to the cosmic metres that the basic world-movements unchangingly endure. A balance harmony maintained by a system of subtle recurrence is the foundation of immortality in created things, and metrical movement is simply creative sound grown conscious of this secret of its own powers.’ – Sri Aurobindo, ‘The Future Poetry’
